Move: Fitness First BEAT Heart Rate Based Training
Fitness First has been getting a bit of a makeover lately, and as part of that revamp they have just launched the swanky new Fitness First BEAT in Charing Cross, a brand new workout concept based on heart rate training. Before your class, you’re fitted with a heart rate monitor to track your activity, which is displayed on screens all around the gym, so you can see how you (and every other person in your class!) are doing. There’s a choice of different classes available depending on the level of intensity you want the workout to be.
We decided to jump straight into the deep end and went for the 90% HIIT PRO class – the toughest one on the schedule – which consists of 30min of explosive activities with very short recovery intervals – exercises included everything from cycling to burpees to sandbag throwing to abs. Now, we both work out quite a fair bit, so trust us when we say this: it was possibly one of the hardest classes we’ve ever done! All around the gym there’s screens showing how your heart is performing, so you can up or lower the intensity of your training to hit the right target. Not only was it interesting to see what exercises make you work the hardest, but it adds a level of competition to the workout, making it even more interesting. The whole session is set to a great soundtrack and upbeat trainers to drag you through when you feel like collapsing!
Despite our session only being 30mins long, we were – wait for it – totally BEAT at the end of it (sorry, we had to). And as terrible we may have felt immediately after the class, we’re completely hooked and coming back for more. Honestly, who knew 30mins could be this hard?!!! We were face down on the floor for a while and probably would have stayed there had there not been another class right after. Afterwards, we were sent a detailed graph showing us how we performed during our session, a great way of keeping track of your progress. There’s 14 classes every single day, so there’s plenty of choice…

FASHERCISE SAYS: Hardest class we’ve ever done, but it’s totally worth it. Perfect for people who don’t have a lot of time and want to make the most out of their workout. We like that it’s almost a competition with yourself (and the other participants).
