Who are you?
Charli Cohen – sportswear designer and personal trainer.
What inspires you?
I’m endlessly inspired by people-watching in the gym! Movement and physiology influence much of what I do. From a creative perspective, they inform the silhouettes and style lines of my designs. In terms of function, my work as a PT enables me to understand the practical needs of performance wear, how to make the garments ergonomic, supportive and flattering.
Who is the Charli Cohen girl?
She’s smart, confident and a little bit edgy. She likes to mix up her workouts and is always up for trying something new.
How did you get into designing sportswear?
I’d never really considered anything except a career in fashion. I started my own T-shirt line aged 15, then had a womenswear capsule collection made before I started university. I qualified as a personal trainer during the first year of my fashion degree and by the time I was in my second year, I’d realised sportswear was the perfect consolidation of my two passions. I was fortunate enough to be awarded part-sponsorship from Invista (creators of Lycra). This enabled me to get stuck straight into my own line a few months after graduating and I haven’t looked back!
Where do you see yourself/brand in 5 years’ time?
Whilst I’m keen to maintain a core capsule collection each season, my aim is to expand into additional product lines. I’m currently working on two really exciting collaborations that will come into play towards the end of this year and will be on-going each season. Down the track, I’d like to branch out into accessories and menswear. It would also be amazing to collaborate with one or two of the big name brands on footwear or a high street diffusion line.
What’s the one item every woman should have in her wardrobe?
An awesome pair of leggings that can be worn in the gym, on the street, for travelling etc. I live in my Charli Cohen Laser Leggings – they’re very transitional and super comfy.
What are your style tips for dressing to the gym?
Wear something that makes you feel awesome. If you look and feel good, it will translate into your workout – I like to think of it as the ‘superhero’ effect.
For a more sport-luxe look, try mixing up the silhouettes – an oversized tank layered over a sports bra and leggings or a fitted top tucked into loose-fit rolled up trackpants.
What’s your favourite healthy snack?
I nibble on raw veggies through the day, especially cucumber and peppers.
What do you indulge in on a cheat day?
I have a raging sweet tooth so dessert, always. Crumble and custard is a particular weakness.
What’s your workout of choice?
I love to lift! My workouts mostly revolve around weights training and of course That Girl (co-founded with Christina Howells), which is a series of high intensity bodyweight workouts.
Do you have any fitness goals you would love to achieve?
Handstand push-ups are currently top of my agenda!
What do you do to relax?
I train! It’s the ultimate stress relief and the only time I can switch off from everything else that’s going on.
