Meet Denise Lee, the founder of Alala, a brand new activewear label with NYC attitude. We talk to Denise about her inspirations, the Alala girl and her style tips for dressing to the gym!
Who are you?
Hi! I’m Denise Lee – Founder and CEO of Alala
What inspires you?
Living in New York City is a constant inspiration. We’re surrounded by style and culture every day and we draw a lot of inspiration from the city into our collection.
Who is the Alala girl?
The Alala woman is a modern style-setter who finds time to balance work, play, love and life.
From an early morning spin class to back to back meetings to a late dinner with friends, she is redefining the meaning of living an active life.
She lives her life with the audacity to believe that she can do it all and have it all. The universe is her oyster and every day is another opportunity to make her mark on the world.
How did you get into designing sportswear?
I was training for a triathlon a few years ago and wanted to buy new gear to motivate myself to work out! After looking for weeks and not finding anything that reflected what I wanted, I realized there was an opportunity to launch an activewear line that married style and sport in a modern and compelling way.
Where do you see yourself/brand in 5 years’ time?
I would love to see Alala all over the world! Our customers are asking for us in Europe, Asia and beyond and I would love to see us everywhere that our girl is.
What’s the one item every woman should have in her wardrobe?
An statement jacket can transform the most basic outfit into something special – whether you’re headed to the gym or out for dinner! Our mesh bomber jacket is made of an incredible mesh spacer fabric that is super fashion forward yet so easy to throw on over your gym kit after a workout.
What are your style tips for dressing to the gym?
A pair of great fitted leggings with some style detail is the core of my gym wardrobe. Our Captain crop tight with mesh panels is an amazing piece – especially in bright yellow! I’m a big believer in looking good to feel good!
What’s your favourite healthy snack?
I love raw almonds – they’re the simplest snack but so good. I also find it hard to say no to a green smoothie!
What do you indulge in on a cheat day?
I grew up in Singapore so I’m happiest eating Asian food which isn’t always very healthy — lots of rice!
What’s your workout of choice?
My favorite workout is a really hard bootcamp class with my trainer. There’s nothing fancy to it – we do pushups, burpees, squats etc. but I love pushing myself to my limits. There’s no better feeling that knowing you’re getting stronger and fitter with every workout.
Do you have any fitness goals you would love to achieve?
My ultimate goal would be to do a half-Ironman triathlon. It’s a 2km swim followed by a 90km bike ride and a 21km run. I think triathletes are just incredible.
What do you do to relax?
I love hanging out with my friends and family. They take my mind off of work!
If there was a soundtrack to your life, what song would be playing right now?
I love dance music. The two songs I put on when I need a boost are Titanium by David Guetta feat. Sia and the Duke Dumont remix of Falling by Haim.
