Meet Ann Johannson, ultra-marathon runner and founder of Boom Boom Athletica. Frustrated by the lack of high performance activewear which looks great (or fashionable activewear which lacked performance qualities), Ann set out on a mission to create her own. As a long distance runner, Ann knows exactly what she needs out of her activewear, so Boom Boom is the perfect blend of technical wear and style. 


Who are you?

I am a Swedish Canadian who has called Britain her home for the past 10 years. I can laugh at anything – often at myself. My day is incomplete without working out. I am an introverted extrovert. I have a wide circle of close friends yet I am guarded privately. I have a titanic amount of clothing stuffed into a petite closet.

What inspires you? 

Proving people and myself wrong.

Where do you see Boom Boom Athletica in 5 years’ time?

I really admire how some fashion brands have built a community amongst their fans and I have some ideas along these lines.

What has been your biggest career highlight to date?

Seeing random strangers wearing BOOM BOOM always makes my day, if not my week!

Do you have any advice for people starting their fitness journey? 

Find a partner in crime. You’ll appreciate someone to kick your butt but it’s also great to do the kicking once in a while.

Do you have any advice for people starting out in fashion?

Find good people to work with.

It’s good to make mistakes. Making the same mistake twice is criminal.

Regardless of the upside, avoid fatal risks.

Be prepared for things taking longer and being more expensive than you expect

What’s the one item every woman should have in her wardrobe?

An outfit that makes you smile.

What are your style tips for dressing to the gym?

Dress for the activity. This sounds boring but there is nothing worse than tops riding up or leggings that don’t stay put. I love the cohesive look of a top with matching leggings but the best outfit is the one that you don’t notice (after putting it on) allowing you to focus on getting the most out of your workout.

What’s your favourite healthy snack?

Anything with avocado

What do you indulge in on a cheat day?

A cinnamon or cardamom bun

What’s your workout of choice?

I love trying out new high intensity classes that kick my butt, however I have a soft spot for running.

How do you motivate yourself when you don’t feel like working out?

I remind myself that I have never regretted working out.

Do you have any fitness goals left you would love to achieve?

Complete the Marathon Major Challenge by running Chicago and Tokyo

What do you do to relax?

Talking to my sisters or friends.

What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you? 

Train hard, race easy.

Don’t worry about failures. Instead, worry about the chances you miss when you don’t try.

If it does not challenge you, it won’t change you.
