Over the past couple of years, model Candice Huffine has been popping up everywhere: on magazine covers, billboards and our Instagram feeds. As one of the world’s best known ‘plus size’ models (and we hate using that term, so let’s just drop it, shall we?), she has been part of a group of incredible women paving the way for the fashion industry to become more inclusive. Her beauty, her sass, her openness about what have traditionally been taboo issues and her all-around niceness have turned Candice from a model to an outspoken and refreshing spokesperson for women declaring war on society’s often unrealistic beauty standards.
Not only does she talk the talk, but she walks the walk. With her label DAY/WON, she has created an activewear label which does exactly what she stands for. DAY/WON is not plus size, not straight size, simply every size, with sizes going from XS-5XL. It’s designed to perform and empower, to flatter and support, whatever your size or shape. We spoke to Candice about her inspiration behind the brand, how she stays motivated, her style tips for the gym and much more!
Who are you?
Hi! I’m Candice Huffine. Model, runner, founder of Day/Won, wife, puppy mom, good time haver, encourager of being yourself.
What inspires you?
Strong women. Lucky for me there are so many at the forefront, using their voices to change the world for the better!
Tell us the story behind DAY/WON.
It’s no secret that running changed my life, not because I can physically cover a distance of miles now that I couldn’t before, but because accomplishing the goals I set for myself has made me feel like the most confident, unstoppable, empowered me yet. This is a feeling I want all women to aspire to, so being able to provide that through apparel was a vision of mine. I’ve been a model for 17 years with a dream of designing for almost that many as well, so having the opportunity to blend my two passions was the ultimate plan. After being introduced to NY based, on-demand manufacturer, Ziel, my dreams became a reality and Day/Won was born!
To me a “day won” is any day in which you did something for yourself that makes you feel like the fiercest, strongest, best version of you. You could be going for a run, boxing, and sweating. You could also be taking time to meditate, finish reading that book, play with your kids, and on and on and on. It’s just important to remember to take time for YOU and own the day. Be your best and that is a DAY WON! That is the everlasting motivation of Day/Won!
Why was it so important for you to make DAY/WON an all-size brand?
It was important for my brand to be fully size inclusive for many reasons. I have been fighting for equality in fashion for nearly two decades, begging for the realization to come that women are not divided by size, leaving anyone above a size 12 in proverbial “no man’s land” when it comes to availability of fashion to be proud of. I knew that when my day came, I would blur these lines once and for all and not think twice. Another reason it was so imperative for me to make one complete range for all sizes is because I personally had struggled to find the things Day/Won now provides. As a marathon runner I was constantly looking for high quality leggings that looked fashionable and could stand up to the workouts I was putting them through without sliding down, cutting in, falling apart or just being not my style all around. Day/Won is an exact creation and reflection of something I have always been most passionate about- fab fashion for ALL!
There’s been tremendous change over the past few years, but do you think the fashion industry still needs to change in terms of being more inclusive and if so, how?
I think there is always room for further representation. Until inclusivity is truly commonplace across the board, there is work to always be done. Fashion brands can continue expanding sizing. Makeup campaigns and hair adverts can do more to feature a variety of women. Television and film can diversify their leading ladies more and so on and so on. Everyone needs to be seen all of the time. If not, it’s tokenism.
Where do you see Day/Won in 5 years time?
I see Day/Won as a go-to for fitness, athleisure, and sustainably made apparel. I see us standing with the big name brands as an equal and the one you wear when you need high quality gear to carry you to and through any goal you may have set for yourself. I believe in future of Day/Won to be there supporting and inspiring all women for a very long time to continue striving to be their best self and make each day WON.
In your view, what is the biggest misconception about ‘plus size’?
The biggest misconception is that the plus size woman is not active. I say come stand on the sideline of any race and watch how many curvy women come flying by, crushing their goals. That myth will be shattered in an instant.
Do you have any advice for people starting their own fitness journey?
Ditch the doubt. Don’t overthink yourself out of it. You CAN do anything you put your mind to so stop letting it hold you back for no other reason than fear of failure. Just go. You embark on a journey like this for you and only you so give yourself a chance to be who you envision and make yourself proud.
What’s the one item every woman should have in her wardrobe?
Day/Won compression leggings. Your booty looks fire, they can stand up to a marathon or just be a great day to day outfit staple. As a girl who used to have a drawer of black leggings-I’m happy to have cleared the bench and just roll with one!
What are your style tips for dressing to the gym?
Wear a look! I spent so long wearing the same tee shirt I would sleep in or ill -fitting pants that slid all around when I moved. I thought “what does it matter if I’m just going to sweat and get gross in them”, but I realize it does. Not only is performance gear made for a purpose…performing at your peak, but also there is some psychological correlation for me in looking good and feeling good. In a actual workout outfit I find I am dragging less, more motivated and ready to rock! Try it!!!!
What’s your favorite healthy snack?
A green smoothie.
What do you indulge in on a cheat day?
Wait, we only get one cheat day? 😉 Buffalo wings and beer all the way.
What’s your workout of choice?
How do you motivate yourself when you don’t feel like working out?
I look back on the races I accomplished and remind myself I can conquer some pretty hard stuff, so one afternoon sweat sesh isn’t going to break me. And then I remember how great is always makes me feel and peel myself up and get dressed.
Do you have any fitness goals left you would love to achieve?
I would LOVE to shave off some time from my half marathon PR. I know there are some things I can do differently in order to be stronger so I would love to see how I can do after training a bit differently.
What do you do to relax?
I veg out with my puppies and watch all the bad tv a girl can handle!
What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
Your only competition is with yourself.
If there was a soundtrack to your life, what song would be playing right now?
